The reception area is the first room your customers see, so it’s important it looks exceptional. After all ‒ first impressions really do count! This crucial area is often given no thought or attention and yet they are like ‘the window of your company’s soul’. However, with careful thought, you can create an impressive space that not only reflects your organisation but can be used as a valuable marketing tool.

So, is it time for an upgrade?

Start With the Walls and Floor

Ensure your flooring is practical as well as hardwearing ‒ there will be plenty of traffic, so it must always look clean and in good condition. Wood looks homely, whilst tiles look smart and efficient. Whatever you decide, choose a neutral shade, but don’t be tempted to add a rug as these can be a trip hazard.

Think neutral colours for the walls too, for example, white is crisp and clean looking but can look stark. Softening the colour with an ivory or cream works well and you can always break this up by having one ‘statement wall’ in your company’s colours.

Choose Great Artwork…

More than anything else, the artwork you hang on the walls will define the character of your reception area. Many companies use artwork to enhance their branding by incorporating either the colours or a large framed picture of the company logo. In restaurants and hotels, the artwork can be bright and contemporary or classic in style. This all depends on the character and ambience you are trying to create.

Floresy - Hotel reception art

…and stylish Furniture

The reception area is where people first arrive, meet company representatives, wait for meetings or their table reservation. It is really important to ensure that this area is attractively furnished and has comfortable seating. There are a variety of styles to consider; the clean minimalistic lines of Nordic furniture and the beautifully curved shapes of classic styles – plus all those in between!

It’s important to remember that the furniture should be good quality and well made as it will be constantly in use. It’s also very important to have furniture that can be easily cleaned as mud and split drinks will be common occurrences. A large central coffee style table will prove very useful too!

Assess Your Lighting Needs

Lighting is an aspect of interior design that frequently gets forgotten but is so important from a practical point of view. Carefully placed lamps and spotlights can create pools of light helping to develop the room’s ambience. Adequate lighting in a reception area is vital, as many customers will want to read whilst they wait and staff will need to carry out duties such as taking payments etc.

Other Points to Consider

  1. Do you need somewhere for people to hang coats and jackets? An enclosed wall cupboard with plenty of hanging space looks smart.
  2. Do you need a stand for rain-drenched umbrellas?
  3.  If you are welcoming visitors to your company, consider investing in a coffee machine.  A complimentary coffee whilst they wait can be a popular addition.  Pay careful consideration to dirty spoons and condiments left around, especially in these times of COVID.
  4. Would customers enjoy reading a magazine? But only keep a few fresh copies available rather than a huge pile of tatty old ones!

The Final Touches

By now your new reception area will be looking very stylish but may feel as though it is missing something important – and it is, but this can easily be put right.

Include Plants!

…better yet artificial plants.

A single large plant in a corner can look dramatic, or a large planter with a variety of different houseplants should do the trick! If the reception desk or coffee table looks dull, a beautiful plant arrangement in a stylish container will definitely make all the difference. Trailing plants can be cleverly used to add interest to a plain section of wall or to disguise an ugly staircase.

Creating a smart new reception area will pay dividends as customers will feel warmly welcomed and it won’t be long before they return again!

Floresy’s extensive range of artificial trees and plants includes a collection of artificial boxwood products. Boxwood is also more simply referred to as ‘box’.

What is box?

Box is a small, slow-growing tree or shrub with small, glossy green leaves. Box is a popular choice with gardeners and is often found in the form of neat hedging.

Because of it’s small, dense leaves and slow-growth, Box is also the perfect choice for topiary.

What is topiary?

Topiary is a horticultural practice of training and clipping plants into forming different shapes. The choice of plant isn’t exclusive to Boxwood but usually involves evergreen shrubs of some kind. Laurel and Holly are also popular choices.

Topiary is an ancient practice. In Europe, it dates back to Roman times and is mentioned in Pliny the Elder’s famous book, Natural History.

There is no limit to the shapes you can create. Perhaps only gravity or the gardener’s imagination are the boundaries. More formal shapes include simple rectangular hedging, columns or spheres or ball shapes, sometimes stacked on top of each other. Archways sometimes feature within a row of boxwood hedging.

But animals and crazy shapes are also popular. We may question whether the more wonky shapes were intentional or happy accidents, however.

Bonsai is a specialist form of topiary where plants are clipped to mimic miniature trees.

The benefits of artificial boxwood topiary

As you would expect, Topiary is a labour intensive pursuit. It requires the careful maintenance of the boxwood tree to keep the desired shape looking neat and trim.

Artificial boxwood trees balls don't require pruning.

Artificial boxwood trees don’t require pruning.

Artificial boxwood trees don’t require pruning. There are no dead branches to remove plus they won’t suffer from boxwood blight.

Each topiary shape won’t change and is maintenance-free. So, you will never accidentally trim the wrong branch and ruin the shape.

What Artificial Boxwood Trees are available from Floresy?

Artificial Boxwood Balls

The artificial boxwood range of products starts with balls. Yes, artificial boxwood balls! This classic design is also called Standard Trees or Tree Standards. This is a classic design. Other types of plants that are popular for standards are anything that grows a woody stem including Lavender, Conifers and Fuchsias.

Boxwood balls are either in singles or combine multiple balls on top of each other, sometimes with bare woody stems separating each sphere.

Our artificial boxwood ball trees with single spheres come in miniature 25cm and 30cm sizes. Plus a 100cm deluxe tree and a boxwood ball available in different sizes.

Artificial Boxwood Spirals

Perhaps the most impressive products in our range include these two spiral trees.

The Boxwood Royal Spiral has a very grand appeal with it’s tapering design and impressive 190cm height. Therefore, they are awesome for framing a doorway or creating a central focal point to a display.

By contrast, the boxwood spiral tree is not a mere commoner, however. It’s a quirky and fun design giving it surprising versatility. It’s modern and eclectic and contemporary with a nod to formal gardens of the past.

Artificial Boxwood Trees

Less showy than other forms of topiary, these shapes are great for adding architectural structure to a planting scheme.

The shapes are surprisingly versatile and are perfect for use in both formal, classic gardens/schemes or contemporary/minimalist designs. The boxwood tower tree has a softer shape whereas the boxwood pyramid tree has a more rigid and defined shape.

Christmas 2018 is nearly upon us, again, despite it only being a year since the last one. Let’s look at the artificial Christmas trees and plants that Floresy has to offer:

Poinsettia

Artificial Poinsettia Red White

Artificial Christmas Poinsettia Plants

The Poinsettia is a popular Christmas ‘flower’ prized for its deep green leaves and bright red bracts. The bracts aren’t true flowers but instead leaves that turn red (or orange, pink or white depending on the variety).

The plant is originally from Mexico where it also began its association with Christmas. Legend has it that a young girl too poor to buy a gift for Jesus’s birthday picked plants from the roadside instead. The bright red blossoms sprouted from the weeds when displayed on the Church’s alter and – bingo – Poinsettias were created.

In the US, 12th December is National Poinsettia Day.

Floresy’s artificial poinsettias come in either white or red colours.

Advent Crown

Conifers Artificial Advent Wreath

Conifers Advent Wreath Artificial Plant

The Advent Wreath or Advent Crown is a Christian tradition that represents the four weeks of Advent.

A circular wreath made from evergreen plants symbolises the Christian god’s love and eternity. One of the candles is lit on each Sunday of the four weeks of advent. Different Christian sects may use different colours of candles to match the vestments of their priests such as blue, red, violet or rose.

Sometimes, people will add a fifth candle to the advent wreath and light it on Christmas Day.

The advent wreath was made famous on the British children’s TV program, Blue Peter. The presenters made a wreath using wire coat hangers and tinsel.

Floresy’s artificial advent wreath uses conifer branches.

Artificial Christmas Wreath

People have been using assortments of flowers, leaves, twigs and fruits to form rings for centuries. Wreaths are often used as decoration but people may also wear them on their heads or around their necks.

Politicians of the ancient Greco-roman world would wear laurel wreaths on their heads to represent their rank or occupation, such as a politician. Farming communities would make harvest wreaths from the leftover straw from their grain bounty.

The Christmas wreath is made using evergreen foliage and is decorated with twigs, berries or pine cones associated with winter. It has its roots in Pagan religions but has become a popular decorative addition at Christmas time too.

The artificial Christmas wreath from Floresy includes pine cones and a mixture of evergreen conifer and spruce fronds.

Potted Spruce

artificial spruce Christmas tree

Artificial spruce tree in a pot

It’s the classic Christmas tree we all know and love.

Spruce trees are members of the same family as firs and pine trees. They come from northern temperate regions of the planet. They are evergreen trees that have needles instead of leaves. Conifers, the family of trees that spruces belong to, have been growing on earth since the early Carboniferous period, which is about 300 million years ago.

The oldest living tree is believed to be a Norway spruce that is thought to be 9550 years old!

Spruce trees sometimes grow up to 60m in height. So you’ll be glad to know that Floresy’s artificial spruce trees are available in more manageable 145cm, 160cm and 180cm sizes.

Silver Winter Tree

artificial silver tree with no leaves

Artificial silver tree

If you’re looking for an alternative look for your Christmas display, why not consider this silver artificial tree? Resembling a deciduous tree in deep winter, these trees have no leaves and their bare branches are silver in colour.

Their shimmer is a perfect addition to a winter wonderland scene but likewise, those barren branches would make for a dramatic festive look.

In the 1950s, silver Christmas trees made from aluminium gained popularity. It’s dramatically artificial look matched the era of innovation, atomic power and the dawning of the space-age. But they came to represent the over-commercialisation of Christmas and had lost their appeal by 1965.

Now, these retro trees are collector’s items and museum exhibits. Despite their bad-taste design, they are cultural icons of the hopeful and positive spirit of the 1950s.

Snow Tree

snow tree xmas

snow tree, green and snow

Floresy’s snow tree is a ready-to-display artificial Christmas tree that comes complete with lights. The thick branches covered with glossy green needles are decorated to simulate the snow-covered fronds of a forest in winter.

The tradition of bringing an evergreen branch indoors for a winter festival goes back for thousands of years. Most pagan or pre-Christian rituals would use branches or fronds of evergreen foliage fashioned into wreaths. Christianity popularised the tree tradition, most likely alongside the already accepted the pagan customs.

Prince Albert introduced the Christmas Tree tradition to the UK during Queen Victoria’s reign. Decorating trees at Christmas time had grown in fashion among the European nobles during the early 19th century.

Before plastic tinsel and baubles, people would decorate their trees using fruits and paper flowers.

It isn’t surprising that forest bathing – spending time in a forest or other green space – is good for you.

Forest bathing or Shinrin yoku is becoming very popular in some countries. Countries such as Japan, in particular, take this practice very seriously.

But more than just hokem or new-age hippy-ness, there is growing scientific evidence to back up why spending time in green spaces is good for our health.

A recent analysis in the scientific journal, Environmental Research, drew on data from multiple previous studies. The combined studies tracked a total of 290 million participants from 20 different countries. The study suggested a correlation between spending time in green spaces and several health benefits:

  • Reduces stress
  • Reduces the risk of coronary heart disease
  • Lower blood pressure and cholesterol
  • Reduces risk of Type II diabetes

Above all, the participants were also more likely to describe their own health as “good”.

Why is forest bathing is good for our health?

There are many contributing factors to why spending time in green spaces is good for us. They include:

  • Promotes physical activity
  • Social interaction
  • Exposure to sunlight
  • Improved air quality

Other theories include an increased exposure to the microorganisms can strengthen the immune system. But also that particular chemicals emitted by trees may actually affect our health in different ways. Some compounds have anti-bacterial properties whilst others may actually increase the activity of our immune system.

Forest bathing as a therapy

“Green prescriptions” have been given to people with various ailments since the Victorian age. And the connection between greenery and health contributed to town planning and the addition of so many parks during the 19th century.

The NHS provides advice to their GPs on the physical and mental benefits of visiting green places. The NHS states that 6-8 months after receiving a green prescription, 63% of patients are more active and 46% have lost weight. Encouraging physical activity outside in good quality green spaces is, therefore, a valuable tool in disease prevention.

Forest Bathing and Biophilic Design

Of course, the principles behind forest bathing and biophilic design are the same. We are innately connected to nature and benefit from being close to natural things such as water and plants. Biophilic design takes these principles and incorporates them into our urban and interior spaces.

How can I incorporate forest bathing into my lifestyle?

You may already be subconsciously seeking out nature for relaxation. Going for a walk is an obvious idea but for many people living urban lives, access to good quality green spaces may be difficult. So if you’re in a pinch what can you do? Here are some ideas:

  • Listen to nature’s sounds, such as birdsong and running water, to help de-stress and relax.
  • Make sure you have greenery in the form of indoor plants or even artwork depicting natural scenes.
  • Make time at the weekend to visit a green space such as a local park or a garden that’s open to the public.

At Floresy, we understand the importance of greenery in our home and work environments. If you want to increase the greenery in your space, without increasing your water consumption or the time it takes to maintain your plants, our artificial products are here to support your needs. Give us a call today to find out how we can help.

The Floresy range of artificial plants and flowers includes an impressive choice of tall artificial plants including trees. Here are the Top 5 tallest-of-the-tall artificial plants from Floresy:

5. Classic Long Trunk Olive Tree 210cm

This classic long trunk olive stands at 210cm but is also available in sizes 150cm and 180cm. Olive trees are often associated with Mediterranean countries and so are also great choices for restaurants specialising in cuisine from that region.

Floresy offers several trees at 210cm including this big-leaved ficus and the ever popular Dracaena Reflexa tree. You can view our range of tall artificial trees here.

4. Kentia Palm 225cm

Kentia palms are very popular tall artificial plants. They are graceful, tropical plus they are unfussy with their simple fronds. Floresy palms are amazingly life-like and therefore they are popular additions to many offices, lobbies and foyers. Where the long trunk olive has a classic shape, this kentia palm is the classic commercial indoor plant. Little known fact: in London, you are never more than 10 feet from a Kentia Palm…

3. Thin Leaves Braided Trunk Ficus 250cm

Ficus are fig trees. One of the benefits of this particular product is the gnarly braided trunk. They add such realism that these trees deceptively life-like. At 250cm they are impressive by their size alone.

As with all trees, they can act as focal points. But they also work well with the architectural features of a building such as doorways or long walkways. They look especially fabulous in foyers with full height ceilings. However, even with Floresy’s industry-leading realism in the field of faux plants, these artificial fig trees don’t produce actual figs.

2. Amazing Braided Trunk Ficus 300cm

Straight off the back of our thin leaves braided trunk ficus is our Amazing braided trunk ficus. This fig tree is so amazing partly because it comes in an amazing choice of seven sizes from 120cm to 300cm! Its leaves are broader than it’s cousin at No. 3 which gives it a bushier feel.

Three metres in height is a seriously tall artificial plant. So it needs careful consideration as to where it should go. If you like the idea of an impressively big tree like this but you’re working with average ceiling heights, consider using one of the smaller sizes. For a typical 2.4m ceiling height, a product of 210cm will happily fill that space without looking cramped. Three-metre products generally work best is open plan or full ceiling height spaces.

Architectural plants are the backbone of any exterior planting scheme. If gardens are rooms, architectural plants are the furniture. These vital plants are the structure around which smaller or seasonal plants are placed. They act as focal points for a bed of plants to give them volume and presence. But they can also have more simple yet structural uses such as defining a doorway or walkway. Or just filling a space. Wherever they are used, they add height and visual impact to a design.

In modern minimalist architecture, structural plants are often used in isolation to create drama using a minimal number of plants. The choice of planter or pot that the architectural plants are placed in is often as important as the choice of the plant itself. The use of plants in sleek and cutting-edge exteriors helps soften the overall look. The coldness of stone, steel and glass emphasises the green of the foliage.

landscape designDesign by Rayavat Engineering

Architectural plants design tips

  • Choose a bold or striking plant as a focal point to a flower bed or a collection of pots.
  • Add instant height to a space to create more visual interest
  • Using a large artificial as the focus plant(s) will require far less maintenance and will look good in any location.
  • Use planting to soften the harsh lines of the outside of a building

Unlike their natural counterparts, Floresy artificial architectural plants will not grow bigger to obscure a window or view. What you get is how it will stay. This is a big advantage when designing a look of a space. Especially if the style is precise and ordered like minimalism often is. Very low maintenance also means no watering and no sweeping up dead leaves.

What makes a plant an architectural plant?

Some people may argue that certain plants can be classified as architectural whilst others will disagree. It is the use and placement of a plant that makes it architectural or structural. Because the plant needs to add a certain focus, architectural plants have similar traits. Architectural plants will often have at least one of the following:

  • A distinctive shape
  • A distinctive leaf colour or shape
  • Evergreen or offer interest all year round
  • Interesting bark or stems
  • Generously sized (but aren’t we all?)

You can be creative and use any plant architecturally as it is all about the context. A climbing ivy or wisteria can be used to frame a doorway just as two identical topiary boxwoods in striking planters. Use low, ground-cover plants around the edge of a patio to create a visual boundary. Likewise, place them around the base of a statue or sculpture to contrast with its height.

Choosing architectural plants

Buying real architectural plants is certainly a considered purchase with mature specimens carrying a hefty price tag. A significant advantage of choosing a Floresy artificial architectural plant is that your investment will require far less maintenance, look exactly the same all year round, will not grow to spoil a design and can be moved to different locations and still look just as good. All these factors mean that your investment is more secure and has a longer lifespan than a real plant could be.

Tall and upright architectural plants

Artificial Yucca in pot

Yuccas are great architectural plants for both indoor or outdoor.

Yucca plants are known for their tough, sword-like spiky leaves and are popular as both an indoor and outdoor plant. The leaves of a sansevieria are also spiky and are also known as ‘snake tongue’. They come in a dark green and this yellow-green variety. Both this artificial yucca and this sansevieria are great solutions for adding vertical drama when floor space is at a premium. The yucca and Sansevieria are also useful for creating a more tropical feel to a setting.

Sansevieria come in two shades of green and make a fantastic feature plant when space is a premium.

Formal architectural plants

Boxwood gentle topiary tree in the pot

Nothing is more classical in a garden landscape than a box topiary. This beautiful box in a pot from Floresy combines the formal choice of the plant with a softer shape and styling. With a bonsai-inspired shape, this particular product will suit any more formal setting including oriental gardens because of this delicate shaping. The thuja conifer tree offers a very traditional look and so is equally suited to a formal presentation. You can easily imagine a line of these trees flanking a gravel walkway on the approach to a stately hotel or conference centre. But they will look equally at home in a very professional office reception. It is a very flexible choice because you can use it in a variety of different situations.
